Christopher Hawes III

Not Just Today
My love, they say today's the day
To shower you in red bouquets,
To pen sweet words upon a card,
To love you deeply, fast, and hard.
But love like ours so strong, so true
Deserves more than a day or two.

It isn’t bound by fleeting trends

Or measured just in how it ends.
It’s in the way I say your name,
Like poetry without refrain.

It’s in the way my fingers trace
The outline of your sleeping face.
It’s in the mornings, soft and bright,

When I pull you closer in the light.

It’s in the coffee that I make,
In every breath, in every ache.
It’s in the nights when skies turn grey,
And storms attempt to pull away
The love we’ve built through time and trial,
Yet still, I’d walk that extra mile.

Not just on days the world declares

That love is meant for grand affairs.

Not just with roses, not with gold,

But in the quiet hands we hold.

It’s in the patience, in the grace,
In every kiss upon your face.
In every promise, every vow,
That says, “I love you”, then and now.

Valentine’s may come and go,
With fleeting gifts and scripted show.

But I will love you all the same,
Through every season, every change.
Not just today, no, that won’t do,

But every day, I’ll choose you too.
